Suspect Who Allegedly Wounded a Female Deputy with Shotgun Is an Illegal Immigrant

The suspect who allegedly shot a Humboldt County sheriff’s deputy with a shotgun on Sunday is an illegal immigrant from Mexico.

He was deported in 2015.

According to the Times Standard, Humboldt County Sheriff William Honsal said 30-year-old Hugo Parral-Aguirre allegedly shot the female deputy in the shoulder with a 12 gauge shotgun.

The incident began shortly after midnight Sunday, when deputies were called about a dispute on a Ferndale dairy farm. Honsal indicated that “a deputy and a sheriff’s sergeant arrived on scene shortly before 12:50 a.m. in marked vehicles and approached a small barn-like structure on the property.” As they approached a woman emerged from the residence claiming that she was being held captive by Parral-Aguirre. Moreover, she alleged that Parral-Aguirre was trespassing.

The deputy and sergeant drew their guns after the woman said Parrel-Aguirre was armed. They approached the barn where he was holed up, only to have Parral-Aguirre allegedly fire one 12 gauge shell at the female deputy. She was struck on the shoulder, just above her bullet-proof vest. Parral-Aguire was then shot three times, as the deputy and sergeant opened fire.

Honsal said the outcome was “lucky,” as the deputy’s shotgun wound could have proven fatal is “a few inches away.”

Parral-Aguirre was later located in the lower floor of the residence and arrested by SWAT after he “refused orders in both Spanish and English.” His wounds were not life-threatening.

The deputy is in stable condition.

Honsal told reporters that “Parral-Aguirre had previously been arrested by the sheriff’s office on suspicion of battery in 2008, and had been transferred to a federal prison for entering the country illegally before voluntarily returning to Mexico.” He was also “deported by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency in 2015.”

On October 5, 2017, the San Francisco Chronicle reported that Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed legislation making California a “sanctuary state.” Brown’s move increased protections for illegal immigrants residing in California.
