The Clemson Tigers have a chance to return to the college football national championship game for the third straight year, in hopeful anticipation of that event, the Clemson City Council has decided to relax its ban on open alcohol.

The Tigers still have to vanquish the University of Alabama in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. But if they come out on top next month, the residents of their hometown will be ready to celebrate as the Tigers go on to face the winner of the Georgia vs. Oklahoma Rose Bowl game.

Apparently, though, with the Tigers looking hot, the city fathers felt that its strict ban on open alcohol might put a dampener on the hopefully upcoming revelry. So, on Monday night the city council set to work to help assure the fun.

During Monday’s meeting, the council members “approved a downtown National Championship viewing event festival along with the suspension of open container laws starting at 6 p.m. on Jan. 8 if the Tigers go to the National Championship game,” Fox Carolina reported.

There was a catch to the decision, though. The city council warned that fans would not be able to bring their own libations to the celebration and noted that they would have to purchase their alcoholic bevereges from the bars and restaurants in the business district.

The Smoke Room’s David Hookstead celebrated the move saying the council’s vote is surely the “most popular move a politician could ever make.”

“Nobody who votes in favor of beer and football is ever going to lose. It’s simply a fact,” Hookstead added.
