Trying to be healthy around Christmas can be tough.

Particularly when you think you’re following a healthy recipe book.

A nutritionist coach from Bristol has recently revealed that Joe Wicks’ latest book, Cooking for Family and Friends, contains double the calories of fast food meals.

Matt, from Apex Fitness Systems, calculated the calories and nutritional information in several recipes from the new cookbook and compared them to fast food favourites Big Mac, a Domino’s Dessert and Burger King bacon burger with fries.

And the result?

Well, one of his recipes, a beef stew dish, has more than double that of a Big Mac.

Joe Wicks’ Nanny Kath’s beef stew contains 1,028 calories while the Big Mac burger has 508.

Meanwhile, the Body Coach’s Chocolate Fondant has 804 calories while the Domino’s Chocolate Melt Cake has 374 calories per serving.

And Joe’s roast beef has 1,295 calories compared to Burger King’s bacon double cheeseburger and fries 660 calories.

Still, it’s worth bearing in mind that it’s not so much about calories but about how healthy the food you’re consuming is.

And it’s something Joe clearly follows – in his introduction to the book, he says on the cover that he doesn’t include calorie counts in his recipes as he doesn’t want to encourage obsessive calorie counting.

Instead, he recommends that his followers exercise four to five times a week for 25 minutes so they can enjoy the recipes and become lean.

He wrote in his book: ‘If you want to actually see changes in your body, get moving and try to make exercise a part of your life.

‘There’s no need to try to get by on a really low-calorie diet when, instead, you can exercise, feel good, and eat all the meals from this book knowing you are making progress.’
