Virgil van Dijk has been left out of Liverpool‘s squad to face Manchester City due to a hamstring injury.

The £75 million signing from Southampton made his debut for Jurgen Klopp‘s side last week when he scored the winner to knock Everton out of the FA Cup at Anfield.

But Klopp has refused to risk the Dutchman’s fitness ahead of their clash against the Premier League leaders at Anfield on Sunday afternoon.

‘[He is] a little bit injured – not really serious but too much,’ Klopp told Liverpool’s official website.

‘It was immediately after the game [against Everton] he felt a little bit. We made an assessment.

‘If it’s the last game of the season maybe you take the risk but it’s not the last game of the season obviously. That’s why we can’t take the risk.’

Instead of Van Dijk, Dejan Lovren partners Joel Matip in the centre of Liverpool’s defence against City.
