North And South Korean Athletes Bonded Over Oreo McFlurries For Breakfast

North and South Korean athletes bonded over McDonald’s McFlurries after their respective governments forced them to join hands for the Winter Olympics, according to one South Korean athlete.

“In the dining hall two days ago, I saw the North Koreans in lineup at McDonald’s,” Randi Heesoo Griffin, the South Korean forward on the joint Korean women’s hockey team, revealed Wednesday. “They were getting Oreo McFlurries for breakfast.”

“We all laughed about that and had McFlurries together for breakfast,” she added, according to Yonhap News Agency.

Griffin was one of four South Korean players who spoke at a press conference Wednesday about their experiences with the North Koreans at the Winter Olympics.

Only a few weeks before the start of the Games, the North and South agreed to create a unified Korean hockey team, forcing 23 South Koreans and 12 North Koreans together. The decision triggered significant backlash in South Korea, where most people oppose the creation of a unified team.

Critics argued that the diplomatic stunt unnecessarily politicized a sporting event and unfairly allowed the players to be swept up by broader geopolitical forces on the Korean Peninsula. Supporters, however, have praised the joint team, with one member of the International Olympic Committee suggesting that the team should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

The team finished the Winter Olympics without a win.

That North and South Korean players were able to bond over McDonald’s McFlurries is not surprising, as the North and South have a history of coming together over desserts. Before the jointly-run Kaesong Industrial Complex closed, Choco Pies from South Korea were a big hit with the North Korean workers.

Some of the other South Korean players who spoke Wednesday revealed that their favorite memories included dining together, chatting, and playing together for the first time.
