Virginia Tech’s Buzz Williams made one of the softest moves I’ve ever seen from a basketball coach Monday night against Duke.

Duke Star Grayson Allen was at the free throw line near the end of the game when Va. Tech fans broke out into “bullsh*t” chants.

Seems very reasonable given the stakes of a major game against Duke. Well, Williams never got the memo because he grabbed the microphone and told the students to stop cussing.

What is Williams thinking here? Rule number one of playing at home is that the fans have to be ruthless. It should be like a war zone in that arena. I want the road team to be on the edge from the moment they roll into town until they load up the busses to leave.

What I certainly don’t want is my head coach telling the fans to shut up and stop cussing. Give me a break. Those fans have probably been drinking since noon in anticipation for this game. They’ve been thinking about it for the past week, and they showed up with some energy.

What’s not to love about that? Williams should have grabbed the microphone and whipped the crowd into a frenzy. He should have told them to crank things up a few more levels.

It’s such a soft move that it’s almost emasculating for Williams. I would be embarrassed if Bo Ryan ever grabbed the microphone while I was at Wisconsin and told us to calm down. I guess that’s just the difference between coaches who dominate and coaches who win just enough to get by. Either live with a championship mentality, which I expect the fans to bring to every game, or find a different profession.
