Texas High School Basketball Star Turns Out To Be A 25-Year-Old Man
Texas man Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley is in some serious trouble after posing as a teenager to play high school basketball.
The Dallas News reported the following:
A 25-year-old man who officials say posed as a 17-year-old so he could once again take to the basketball court as a high school athlete attended Dallas high schools for nearly nine months before his arrest last week.
Sidney Bouvier Gilstrap-Portley began the school year at Skyline High School, where he enrolled claiming to be a Hurricane Harvey refugee. Months later, he moved to Hillcrest High School and joined the basketball team, Dallas ISD officials said. As a student there, Gilstrap-Portley dated a 14-year-old classmate, the girls mother said.
Gilstrap-Portley, who was arrested Friday night, faces a charge of tampering with government records. He was booked into the Dallas County Jail last week and has since bonded out, according to court records.
I want to be angry, but can we really be mad at a guy whose love for the game is so great that he was willing to get in serious legal trouble? Absolutely, we can still be mad, but that doesnt make it any less funny. Imagine being a full-grown adult and missing high school basketball so much that you lie your way onto a team of teenaged kids.
Also, this Gilstrap-Portley character was no slouch on the court. According to Dallas News, the guy was the offensive player of the year. No, should we be a little shocked a full grown man didnt win MVP? Maybe, but perhaps hed have gotten there with a few more years of high school eligibility.
Imagine how pissed youd be if you were on one of the teams that this guy rolled up on, and finding out nine months later that you were playing a guy who could buy a beer years before you were even in high school.
I have no idea what the punishment should be for this guy. The fact he was dating a teenager while this was all going on is probably whats going to screw him the most. I cant imagine the judge will look kindly on that. What an overall bizarre situation.
To be completely honest, I had a lot of fun going 29–0 and winning state in high school. It was a chill time, especially from the end of the bench. Still, theres no a shot in hell I would ever lie about my age in an attempt to repeat my playing days. No chance at all.
