Brett Favre Reveals He Went To Rehab A Shocking Amount Of Times

Green Bay Packers legend Brett Favres struggles with addiction were way worse than initially thought.

Its well-known that Favre had an issue with pain pills and sought out help. What was unknown until Monday was that Favre had actually been in rehab three different times. He opened up in Peter Kings final column for Sports Illustrated.

Favre told King the following about his three trips to rehab:

“You thought, Man, this guys high on life. You didnt know there was a reason for it. It is really amazing, as I think back, how well I played that year. That was an MVP year for me. But that year, when I woke up in the morning, my first thought was, I gotta get more pills. I took 14 Vicodin, yes, one time. I was getting an hour or two of sleep many nights. Maybe 30 minutes of quality sleep. I was the MVP on a pain-pill buzz. The crazy thing was, Im not a night owl. Without pills Id fall asleep at 9:30. But with pills, I could get so much done, I just figured, This is awesome. Little did I know [fiancée and now wife], Deanna would be finding some of my pills, and when she did, shed flush them down the toilet.

I actually went to rehab three times. I saw the most successful, smart people — doctors, professional people — lose it all, ruin their lives.”

Say whatever you want about Brett Favre as a player, but he should be commended for opening up about his struggles. Addiction is not a joke, and we often dont view athletes as real people. Theyre viewed as mythical figures who are just meant to be watched on television.

Rarely do we, as fans, think about some of the demons and problems that some of these athletes are facing. Hopefully, more athletes and fans are paying attention and listening to what Favre is saying. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with getting help, even if it takes multiple trips. Id rather read and write a billion stories about people getting help and opening up than one single story about a player who swallows one too many pills or drinks himself into an early grave. Favre is one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play and may go down in history for having the strongest arm in NFL. The accolades and accomplishments would take hours to fully talk about. Hes also a regular guy who had some serious demons to fight. Major props to him for being honest about.
