Matildas’ World Cup seeding in jeopardy after shock Chile loss

The Australian women's national team have recorded a rare home defeat to Chile, with the visitors triumphing 3-2 in their international friendly at Penrith Stadium.

Key points:

  • The Matildas had not lost on home soil in four years
  • The loss may have a bearing on the Matildas' world ranking
  • The two teams will meet again in Newcastle on Tuesday

It is the Matildas' first loss in Australia since 2014 and the result could have a bearing on their hopes of being among the top-seeded teams at next month's draw for the 2019 World Cup to be hosted by France.

The defeat may see the Matildas lose crucial FIFA ranking points and slip from number six on the standings.

Emily van Egmond put the Matildas ahead with a penalty on nine minutes and the hosts seemed on their way in front of a strong crowd of 15,185.

The Matildas dominated the first half, forcing Chilean goalkeeper Christiane Endler into a string of saves, notably from Sam Kerr and Tameka Butt.

But Francisco Lara capitalised on some self-inflicted defensive chaos with a smart long-range strike to draw world number 39 Chile level midway through the first half.

Tameka Butt jumps to avoid a Chilean tackle.

The situation worsened for the Matildas almost immediately after the break, as they failed to clear a free kick and Carla Guerrero steered home when Elise Kellond-Knight just failed to clear on the line.

The Matildas' domination dissipated and the match turned into a stop-start affair, with limited sights of goal and the home side's goalkeeper Lydia Williams barely touching the ball.

Kerr hit the post late with a header and substitute Katrina Gorry should have drawn the Matildas level with only the goalkeeper to beat, but Yesenia Huenteo broke away to score the sealer for Chile.

Van Egmond scored her second from the penalty spot with virtually the last kick of the match after the referee deemed Kerr had been upended.

The two teams will meet again in Newcastle on Tuesday night in the second and final match of the friendly series.
