River Island has just unveiled its new children’s clothing line…and it’s gender-neutral.

Following in the footsteps of John Lewis, they’re the latest brand to embrace the concept of genderless garms for kids.

Their’s is a streetwear collection, featuring an urban-inspired palette of grey, black and white, and includes loungewear and graphic tees.

Aimed at children aged five to 12, the message behind the 12-piece line is ‘kids just want to be kids’, and has been designed to encourage ‘little adults to make their own style stamp, gender aside’.

‘Gone are the stereotypes, giving way to a modern, urban take on loungewear in this capsule collection that satisfied both genders,’ says Rebecca Perry, kidswear design manager at River Island.

And no doubt, they won’t be the last store to take their kidswear in this direction.

After all, unisex clothing will be a boon to parents sick of having to trawl through piles of sapid pink jumpers to find something for their daughters, or those who have children of both sexes and want them to be able to share clothes.

There’s been plenty of backlash in recent times against overt genderising of kids clothing at stores like Clarks, who labelled girls’ school shoes ‘Dolly Babe’ and boys’ as ‘Leader’.

Asda was also dragged over the coals for selling a T-shirt range including slogans like ‘Future Scientist’ for boys and ‘Hey Cutie’ for girls.

Anything that stems the tide of tragic sexist slogans is a thumbs up from us.
