Arsene Wenger described Mesut Ozil‘s goal against Newcastle as a ‘gem’ but was equally delighted it turned out to be a matchwinning effort.

After three games without a win, the Germany international secured a valuable three points which, temporarily at least, lifted the Gunners back into fourth position in the Premier League.

A largely drab contest was settled in the 23rd minute when the ball dropped to the 29-year-old just inside the penalty area and the former Real Madrid star sent the thumping volley back over his shoulder and into the roof of Rob Elliot’s net.

‘Ozil’s goal was a gem. It’s good that he scores important goals,’ said Wenger. ‘That was a great goal.

‘Usually he is the guy who gives the ball to somebody else so I’m glad he took the gamble to score the goal.

‘Overall we deserved to win – we had plenty of chances. In the final 10 minutes we became edgy. Overall, I feel we dominated.

‘It was physically difficult today after three games in six days.

‘The strange thing in our last games is that our displays have been good but we didn’t win. That’s why it’s important to win today.’
