Garbiel Jesus has learned he faces a lengthy spell out of action after Manchester City doctors confirmed the striker had suffered collateral knee ligament damage.

The Brazilian broke down in tears when he was forced off the pitch in the draw against Crystal Palace.

Jesus was joined soon after by Kevin De Bruyne, with City still waiting to learn the extent of the playmaker’s injury.

A statement read: ‘Manchester City can confirm Gabriel Jesus suffered a medial collateral ligament injury during the 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace on Sunday.

‘He will undergo further examinations in the coming days to establish the extent of his lay-off.

‘We wish Gabriel a speedy recovery and we will keep you updated on his progress via the Club’s official channels.’

There is no time-frame on Jesus’ recovery period with the club waiting on the results of further assessment.

The news is a blow to City who are in the midst of securing their grip on the Premier League title.

City have opened up a 12-point gap between them and second place, but Pep Guardiola could be without several key players in the coming weeks.

De Bruyne could still be ruled out for a significant period while centre-backs Vincent Kompany and John Stones are already sidelined.

Jesus spoke on social media and assured fans it is not as serious as it could be.

He said: ‘Today I went through an image exam on my left knee that diagnosed a small medial collateral ligament injury.
