Police in Pearland, Texas, are searching for a person reportedly shooting ducks with arrows. The investigation follows complaints from citizens about several being seen with arrows sticking out of them.

Carl Dalton, a Pearland resident, told KTRK ABC13 that several wounded ducks have been spotted in the past few days.

“People are pretty upset in the neighborhood,” he expressed. “They were in the flower beds and there was three of them at one time that had the arrows in them. One was shot and two had them in their leg.”

The neighbors warned the possible shooter or shooters that they are on the lookout.

Pearland is a suburban community located south of Houston. Ducks are a part of the community’s culture, the local ABC affiliate reported.

Police said that at least two of the ducks were taken to the local chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (HSPCA), the Houston Chronicle reported.

HSPCA Executive Director Sharon Schmalz said one of the ducks had two arrows stuck in it while another had an one in its leg joint.

She also expressed concern for the public’s safety when an arrow misses its mark.

“It’s really sad and dangerous because there could be people around, it could ricochet, they could hit somebody in the eye,” Schmolz told KTRK. “So not only is it mean and harmful to the animal, it’s a dangerous thing for people especially in the neighborhood pond like that.”

Pearland police spokesman Officer Jason Wells agreed.

“There’s always going to be potential for a dangerous situation when you involve weapons such as what we’re finding in the general public,” he said. “We would encourage everyone to act with safety as a paramount as up front and first, we don’t want anybody to get hurt.”
