Jose Mourinho says Manchester United ‘have a chance’ of signing Alexis Sanchez and remains hopeful of winning the race despite late interest from Chelsea.

The Arsenal contract rebel is thought to be closing in on a £30m move to Old Trafford after United made a late move to sign the forward ahead of rivals Manchester City.

United offered both a bigger transfer fee and a more lucrative salary package, though Chelsea are now attempting to hijack that offer under the hope that Sanchez would prefer to stay in London.

The Red Devils were in action on Monday night in a Premier League clash against Stoke City, which they comprehensively won 3-0 even without the firepower of Sanchez.

And speaking afterwards, Mourinho tried to articulate his confidence about pulling off a deal for Sanchez: ‘I am not confident but I am not – what’s the opposite of confident? – unconfident. I am just relaxed.

‘He is an Arsenal player, he can stay there, but I have a feeling he can move and if he moves I think we have a chance.

‘But I think most probably a player like him has other big clubs who are interested. Who knows?

‘I think him [Sanchez], Mr Wenger, Mr Gazidis, they are the ones that know really what’s going to happen.’

Probed about whether he felt United had a free run at Sanchez now City had withdrawn, he continued: ‘No I don’t know anything about it. And today I don’t have one single piece of information. So let’s see what happens.’
