A Canadian female hockey skater was awarded a silver medal but removed it upon losing to the United States Thursday.

Jocelyne Larocque, 29, took off her silver medal after her team suffered a devastating loss to the American hockey team at Pyeongchang, according to The Globe and Mail. Larocque’s second-place refusal went for more than 30 minutes until an Olympic official forced her to wear it. She reluctantly returned it around her neck in adherence to the rules, according to an International Ice Hockey Federation official.

“We were going for gold,” Larocque said, noting how difficult it was to accept defeat. A few of her fellow teammates cried during the ceremony out of frustrating loss.

Larocque later apologized for defiantly removing the medal. “In the moment, I was disappointed with the outcome of the game, and my emotions got the better of me,” Larocque said. “I’m proud of our team and proud to be counted among the Canadian athletes who have won medals at these Games,” she added, according to NBC.

The USA beat Canada 3-2 at the Olympic games.
