We all need to pump the brakes a bit on the whole “Tiger Woods is back” talk.

Woods came extremely close to winning the Valspar Championship over the weekend, ultimately finishing second in an extremely entertaining few days of golf.

However, can we please stop heaping praise on people for finishing second? Last time I checked my feet were firmly planted in America, and we don’t celebrate anything other than winning in this country.

He got second place. Congratulations, but that means absolutely nothing. We didn’t hand gold medals to the runner-ups in the Olympics a few weeks ago, right? So, it really doesn’t impress me that he got second.

I’m not cheering against Tiger at all. I hope he actually manages to win a major event. I really do because golf is better when he’s at the top of his game. However, this whole shtick of we need to celebrate the first place loser is so un-American that it’s physically painful to me.

I’ll be the first one to stand up and cheer when Woods finishes first in an event. You have my word. Until then, we all should relax a little bit on the “is he back?” talk. If you’re not first, you’re last. Right now that’s how Tiger should be viewed.
