DC Police Officers Now Receiving Critical Race Theory Training

The Washington, D.C., mayor announced a new initiative earlier in April aimed at teaching law enforcement officers critical race theory to improve community relations.

The 10-hour program includes taking D.C. police officers to the National Museum of African American History and Culture so they can better understand the history of the relationship between officers and the black community, CNN reported Tuesday.

“We are excited that with [Police] Chief [Peter] Newshams leadership, more people in our city, specially police officers, will understand the African American experience in the city, and how it affects the work that they do today,” Mayor Muriel Bowser said during a press conference.

The program, created by the D.C. police and the University of the District of Columbia Community College, also features a component on critical race theory, according to the Washington Post. Critical race theory argues that race is used to make sure white people stay in power.

So far, about 60 to 80 members of the force have undergone the training each week since the beginning of the year. The police chief plans to have the more than 3,000 members trained by the end of the year.

“People who were supposed to serve and protect had played in the enforcement of discriminatory, racist and unjust policies and laws,” Newsham said. “The museum includes very honest and poignant stories of the role that policing played in some of the historical injustices in our country.”
