The Marlins Are Not Handling Jose Fernandezs Death Well

Its officially been over a year since star Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two passengers were killed in a horrific boat crash in the middle of the night.

Fernandez was reportedly driving the boat while under the influence of alcohol and cocaine.

Attorney for estate of Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez says “someone slipped cocaine” into his drink before boat crash “to make it easy to steal $15,000 that Fernandez was carrying in his backpack” https://t.co/Rhpc5rYOgz h/t @MarcACaputopic.twitter.com/20uNY5ACUb

But the case has not been without its drama. Earlier this month, Jose Fernandezs lawyer, Ralph Fernandez, claimed Jose was being framed and unnecessarily dragged after the crash.

On Thursday, ABC affiliate reporter Liane Morejon is reporting that the Marlins has mishandled Fernandezs case ever since his death.

“Attorney Ralph Fernandez (no relation) represents the family of late Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez,” she tweeted. “He says Joses mothers house is in foreclosure and that not even Joses baby daughter has received any benefits following his death.”

Also says plans of a street naming, park dedication & statue have been foiled due to the release of an FWC/toxicology/law enforcement report that pins the boat crash squarely on Jose; says the report “isnt worth the paper its written on”. (More) https://t.co/zY1L5Wju8o

Lastly, Maritza Fernandez says that last month, she got a call from Marlins brass telling her to come clear out Joses locker in the clubhouse which she says had been preserved with his items inside, says she was told it would never be cleaned out. (More) https://t.co/QbCSwrLjcD

Reached out to Marlins for comment, they said: “We have remained in constant contact with Joses family and wanted to provide an appropriate lasting memorial to Jose. We discussed all of these plans with his family.” @WPLGLocal10https://t.co/WduNDaNSa1

If this is true, its pretty low. Even for the Marlins. Jose Fernandezs death was extremely untimely and very questionable. It shouldnt have happened. But you have got to be extremely low to drag any grieving mother like this. Im not saying Miami has to name a street after Fernandez and dedicate a statue to him. They dont even have to honor his name at the stadium (although it would be unwise to not do so because he was a phenomenal player).

The Marlins dont have to pay off his mothers foreclosed house and they dont have to be her shoulder to cry on. But asking her to come clean out his locker after specifically saying you werent going to touch it is just plain heartless. I dont care who you are, its just not right.
