Another week, another Gigi Hadid photoshoot causing controversy.

One minute shes getting naked in the scissor position with her little sister, the next shes being digitally bronzed by Vogue Italia in a creepy Dolezal fashion.

The newest scandal comes as part of a Moschino campaign shot by Steven Meisel and masterminded by the brands creative director Jeremy Scott.

The shots are from Moschinos most recent collection, and the ones posted feature Gigi, Kaia Gerber, and Vittoria Ceretti.

On first glance theyre typical Scott – bright colours and a futuristic aesthetic.

Apparently the inspiration for the collection was Jackie O meets American conspiracy theories, with a look that merges the White House with a spaceship.

However, its Jeremys wording and captions that have people questioning whether fashion will ever learn from their past mistakes.

His Instagram post of Gigi originally began, the only thing thats illegal about this alien is how good she looks. The caption remained on his twitter account but has since been taken down. .

He later changed it to ALIEN NATION ! @gigihadid STARS IN MY NEW @moschino CAMPAIGN SHOT BY STEVEN MEISEL & STYLED BY @carlynecerfdedudzeele HAIR & MAKE UP BY @guidopalau & @patmcgrathreal. WHAT IS AN “ALIEN?” THE CONCEPT OF MY AD CAMPAIGN IS TO BRING ATTENTION TO THE US ADMINISTRATIONS HARSH STANCE TOWARDS ILLEGAL ALIENS. I PAINTED THE MODELS IN MY SHOW AND THIS CAMPAIGN AS A WAY TO OPEN A DISCUSSION ON WHAT EXACTLY AN ALIEN IS – ARE THEY ORANGE BLUE YELLOW GREEN? DOES THIS MATTER? THEY ARE OUR FRIENDS, NEIGHBORS, CO WORKERS, RELATIVES AND PEOPLE WE LOVE.

Given the current situation in the US when it comes to immigration and the fact that children are being incarcerated and taken away from their parents, its not the best time for a play on words about illegal aliens.

Not cool man. This is not "camp", it's actual xenophobia. The caption is not edgy, it's disgusting. Please reconsider

This is a gross clickbait attempt. I physically gagged.

truly when will fashion learn to read the room

The Instagram comments go even further, with @zestylemur saying: YOUR ORIGINAL CAPTION WAS “THE ONLY THING ILLEGAL ABOUT THIS ALIEN IS HOW GOOD SHE LOOKS”! We wont forget that, and changing the caption doesnt change the fact this whole campaign just brings you profit. You want to start a discussion? Stop painting the same models blue and calling it revolutionary. Actually change the fashion game by hiring models that need to be represented. Get out in the street and do something worthwhile. Until then, youre just another white man making money off the suffering of real people.

@tannahhower said, all you did was paint thin cis white women different colors. truly groundbreaking.

Others praised it, with @roycebadalucco commenting, I absolutely LOVE this whole concept! What better way to show US administration that we are all EQUAL we all bleed one color, we all are born one way and we all die! No one is superior to the next! Thats the problem with the world today were too busy dividing and not unifying! A divided house will not stand.

While the shots are undoubtedly beautiful, it seems the issue is with the fact that even if the point hes making is a noble one, there isnt enough (much-needed) diversity.

When it comes to highlighting issues around race and xenophobia, that need is even more exaggerated. Fashion lovers are just as aware of the worlds problems, and dont take things lightly.

A word to the wise Jeremy, Gigi, and co.:

We contacted Moschino for comment, and the brands spokespeople highlighted the change in the caption. They also said:

We also want to point out that Jeremys intentions with the collection and body paint has always been to bring attention to the issue of the current US administrations stance on immigration and “illegal aliens”.

In an interview with Vogue this year, Jeremy said:

Im not anti-alien. I dont want to build a wall.

The writer even said thered be poetic justice in Melania Trump wearing the collection which, while ironic in some sense, may sit badly with many.

Essentially, this comes down to whether its revolutionary or poor taste. Given the reaction, it seems to be all about where your politics and taste levels lie.
