Tributes flow after British snowboarder dies on her 18th birthday

Family and fellow athletes have paid tribute to British snowboarder Ellie Soutter, who died on her 18th birthday.

Ms Soutter claimed Great Britain's only medal at the European Youth Olympic Winter Festival in Erzurum, Turkey last year when she won bronze in the snowboard cross.

She also carried the flag at the closing ceremony of the festival.

Her father Tony wrote on Facebook that he was "so proud of the beautiful young woman she had turned into."

"Ellie I will miss you more than you could have ever imagined," Mr Soutter wrote.

"Rest in peace you little champion!"

The BBC reported Ms Soutter was named in the senior Great Britain squad for the Europa Cup this year and was tipped for a place in the team's 2022 Winter Olympics squad.

Ski cross athlete Emily Sarsfield described Ms Soutter as "such a fun teammate, made me smile everyday, cracking all the jokes and enjoying life to its fullest!"

If you or anyone you know needs help:

"I'm going to miss you and your amazing energy," she said.

British Olympians Lizzy Yarnold, Amy Williams and Aimee Fuller also paid tribute to the young athlete on social media, giving their sympathies to her family.

Ms Fuller, a fellow snowboarder, described Ms Soutter as a "great inspirational talent within our small community".

British Olympic Association (BOC) chair Hugh Robertson and BOC Commission chair Ben Hawes released a joint statement describing Ms Soutter as "an incredibly popular and well-liked member of the team."

"Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this sad time," the statement said.
