Chepstow was all very enjoyable at the weekend but today at Punchestown we have some authentic Gold Cup horses taking each other on, headed by Minella Rocco, who was second in the big race at Cheltenham in March.

The Guardian

Fan-tastic! Man who caught Turner HR ball snags Wrigley shot :-: FOX Sports

He’s become Mr. Hawk-tober.

Remember that fan who made the great catch on Justin Turner’s game-ending home run at Dodger Stadium over the weekend? Guess what? He did it again.

Keith Hupp came up with his second homer souvenir in the NL Championship Series, corralling the ball Cubs star Javier Baez hit into the bleachers at Wrigley Field on Wednesday night.

”I’m still kind of a newbie at this ballhawking stuff,” the retired policeman told The Associated Press in a phone interview from Chicago. ”The only thing that’s lightning strike-ish about this is that it’s two in four days.”

Hupp is 54, from Southern California and has rooted for the Dodgers forever. A season ticket-holder, he always sits in the outfield and has gotten 11 home-run balls this year.

But a pair of playoff goodies – hard to imagine anyone is having a better postseason than him.

Fan-tastic!

”I’m old, I’ve got gray hair and a bum shoulder,” he said. ”I do have a good glove.”

Hupp said the Turner catch was easy. He scrambled toward a railing in the center-field stands and, with no one near him, leaned over to make the snag. The three-run drive in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Dodgers a 4-1 win in Game 2, and Hupp presented the ball to Turner that night.

The grab became an instant highlight and made Hupp an internet sensation. The play he made to get the Baez ball in Game 4, that was more painful.

Hupp was close to the top row of the left-field seats – above the noted ballhawks patrolling Waveland Avenue – when Baez connected in the second inning. The ball hit a back railing and caromed into a swarm of fans, beneath a TV camera stand.

”Everyone was about half my age, but I pounced. I’ll pounce if there are no kids around,” he said.

”I grabbed the ball and tried to tuck it in, like a football,” he said. ”I got piled on pretty good, I could feel a couple guys trying to rip it out of my glove. It felt like I got a cracked rib.”

Hupp planned to be at Game 5 Thursday night with Los Angeles holding a 3-1 lead. One more Dodgers win and he’d get a chance at the ultimate prize.

”I only started doing this stuff a few years ago, after I retired,” he said. ”But I do know that catching a home run ball at the World Series, that would be the holy grail.”

Let's block ads! (Why?)

Original Article

Fox Sports

Damian Collins tells talkSPORT FA bosses must acknowledge mistakes over Mark Sampson affair or quit :-: talkSPORT

MP Damian Collins has called on Football Association bosses to accept responsibility for their failings over the Mark Sampson affair or 'make way for other people' if they are not willing to do so.

Collins chaired the parliamentary hearing into the Sampson scandal on Wednesday, with FA chairman Greg Clarke, chief executive Martin Glenn, technical director Dan Ashworth and HR director Rachel Brace all quizzed over the allegations of discriminatory behaviour by the former England women's manager towards players Eni Aluko and Drew Spence.

From what checks were made on Sampson before he became England manager, to why the FA was withholding half of an £80,000 settlement from whistle-blower Aluko, the 11 MPs on the panel pulled apart the governing body's handling of the bullying, racism and sex allegations.

Having started his evidence to the committee with an apology to Aluko and England team-mate Drew Spence for racist remarks Sampson has finally been found to have made to them, Glenn refused to accept the governing body's entire response was flawed, while Clarke would not apologise personally to Aluko, despite her sitting behind him.

Speaking exclusively to Jim White on talkSPORT on Wednesday, Collins expressed his disappointment that none of the FA hierarchy failed to acknowledge their mistakes over the sorry episode and called for 'massive change' within the organisation.

He said: "The fundamental thing which I take from yesterday's session was it was evidence of massive failures of process that meant serious allegations brought by Eni Aluko were not considered properly and this dragged on for months and left her in an exposed and difficult position. Thankfully, she is a determined lady who was determined to see this through and has been vindicated by this process.

"What was really frustrating yesterday was that people like Dan Ashworth and Rachel Brace, who were personally responsible for failing in that process, weren't prepared to apologise for it and nor was Martin Glenn, the chief executive. They were prepared to apologise, not anything they had done, but for what Mark Sampson had done and they weren't prepared to take responsibility fir the process failures.

"Now, the reason why that is important is these are the people whose responsibility it is that something like this doesn't happen again ad therefore it requires that they acknowledge where they went wrong themselves and they weren't prepared to do that.

Asked if FA bosses should resign, Collins continued: "We all recognise it needs massive change and want to see it happen.

"If not a change of people then a change of approach and a recognition of what's gone wrong. That's what I would like to see.

"It is either incumbent on the current leadership to demonstrate in a way they didn't do yesterday what they are going to do to respond to this or to make way for other people."

And Collins believes issues like the one raised by Aluko could be handled better if the FA brings former experienced former players into the organisation.

He added: "You look at the composition of the board and senior management and the sort of people involved in overseeing a complaint like this, there are not that many people who understand what it is like to be a senior professional and what the game is like. Maybe that would lead to better outcomes."

Listen to the full talkSPORT interview with Damian Collins above

Let's block ads! (Why?)

Original Article

talkSport

LISTEN – Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel defends manager Jose Mourinho amid criticism of ‘negative’ tactics :-: talkSPORT

Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has come to the defence of Jose Mourinho, amid criticism over the manager’s ‘negative’ tactics.

Despite the Red Devils being unbeaten this season, sitting just two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City and being on the brink of the Champions League knock-out stage, there is an air of negativity hanging over Mourinho at Old Trafford.

The manager was hammered for his tactics in the recent goalless draw with arch rivals Liverpool at Anfield, and the haters were out again following their drab 1-0 Champions League victory over Benfica on Wednesday – won by a freak Marcus Rashford free-kick.

MATCH REPORT: Benfica 0-1 Manchester United: Red Devils win ugly in Champions League

The win in Portugal was United’s ninth clean sheet in 13 games and Mourinho is amazed by the negative comments, insisting following the match that ‘being good defensively is not a crime’.

And he has the backing of Schmeichel, with the legendary former goalkeeper telling talkSPORT insisting the club are on the right track with the self-styled Special One at the helm.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, he said: “I’m not making excuses [for their two recent disappointing performances], but I understand and as a fan I accept it for that one game.

“You’ve just come back from the international break and it’s Liverpool away – the one game you don’t want to lose all season – it’s a 12:30 kick off and then you’ve got Benfica midweek, so you’ve got more travelling to do.

“I know he’s got a big squad to work with, but you don’t want to mess around with the team too much.

“You want to win the game, or at least try not to lose the game and unfortunately that is the way football is going – when you get to these important games, you don’t want to lose.

“But I have to say in the same token that I’m very, very pleased with Jose Mourinho’s personal development, I think he’s been brilliant.

“He always said, ‘I will get it right with Manchester United and I will make the fans happy’, but between the lines he has always said, ‘but I don’t have the players’.

“So when he got the players we have played some really entertaining and effective stuff and have scored a lot of goals.

“I’ve seen a big difference from last season and I’m OK with everything that’s happening there.”

Let's block ads! (Why?)

Original Article

talkSport

Aviva Premiership news: England international Alex Lozowski signs new Saracens deal :-: talkSPORT

Alex Lozowski

Thursday, October 19, 2017

England international back Alex Lozowski has agreed a contract extension with Aviva Premiership leaders Saracens.

The reigning European champions said Lozowski's new deal will keep him at Allianz Park until 2020.

Lozowski, 24, has proved to be an integral part of the Saracens squad since he joined them from Wasps last year, offering quality options at fly-half and centre.

And that form was rewarded by him winning two caps on England's successful Argentina tour four months ago.

"We are delighted that Alex has agreed a new deal," Saracens rugby director Mark McCall said.

"Alex will have an important role to play for us as he continues to develop as a player, so naturally we are very happy to announce that he will be staying at Allianz Park until at least 2020.

"In his brief time at the club, Alex has already shown how good a player he is, but the most exciting thing for us is how much improvement we believe there is to come from him alongside our core of young, hungry, home-grown players."

Lozowski's deal follows fresh terms signed in recent weeks at Saracens by the likes of Owen Farrell, Jamie George and Nick Isiekwe.

"I have really benefited from being in the environment and from being around good players and good coaches," Lozowski said.

"I think being surrounded by the calibre of guys that we've got here is only going to bring your game up. I am really grateful to be part of this team."

Let's block ads! (Why?)

Original Article

talkSport

To kneel or not to kneel? Lewis Hamilton faces decision before US GP :-: the Guardian

The championship leader is considering kneeling during the US national anthem on Sunday but F1 and politics have never been comfortable bedfellows

Lewis Hamilton is the most fascinating character in Formula One and thankfully so. It is a sport whose participants have become so stage-managed as to have hidden their personalities behind a slick corporate veneer. Hamilton has been steadfast in remaining true to himself. At this weekend’s US Grand Prix, he may do so again but with potentially huge and also perhaps unexpected repercussions. If the British driver chooses to kneel during the US national anthem on Sunday, as he has said he is considering, it will put him at the heart of one of the most divisive conflicts between politics and sport in recent history.

Related: Ferrari vow to fight Lewis Hamilton to the bitter end of 2017 season | Giles Richards

The Guardian
