The play-offs will be played over two legs during the next international break. The first legs will be between 9 and 11 November and the second legs between 12 and 14 November.

Northern Ireland, seeking a place at the World Cup for the first time in 32 years, will play at home in the first leg.

Opponents Switzerland were desperately unlucky not to have qualified automatically after they won nine of their 10 qualifiers. But they finished behind Portugal on goal difference.

The last time they played Northern Ireland was in 2004, with the match ending 0-0.
