Buying luxury items is a difficult process.

Whether it’s a hangover of my university ‘budget over everything’ mindset or simply the fact that I’d rather be spending my money on things that I don’t use to wipe my bum, going for the cheapest option is a habit that’s hard to shake.

We all know that upgrading your essentials can often lead to a far simpler life (and, in some cases, works out better value in the long run), but it seems I’m not alone in clinging onto my low-cost lifestyle.

A new study from YouGov has revealed that many Brits struggle to go for the luxury option when doing their grocery shopping, more often than not opting for the mid-range version of their essential items.

There are two key exceptions, though: sausages, and mattresses. Of course.

Yep – it seems that sleep and sausages are Brits’ two main priorities when it comes to allowing themselves a little luxury.

42% of people go for the top-range pork sausage when they’re filling their baskets, while 39% will settle for a middle-of-the-road banger.

56% of those surveyed vouched for buying the highest quality mattress, compared to just 38% who’ll settle for a mid-range one.

These are seemingly the only two items which Brits will splash out on, with Brits otherwise overwhelmingly opting for the mid-range item in all other cases – from baked beans to duvets, toothpaste to whole chickens, and everything in between.

The study covered all sorts of daily food and household essentials, as well as more ‘one-off’ purchases, such as kettles and bedroom items.

As for the sausage/mattress debate, it seems all those scare-stories about minced piggy eyelids and a bad night’s sleep literally killing you have worked.

Either that or we Brits have just got our priorities so very right.
