You love sushi – who doesn’t?
It’s probably the one thing standing in between you and vegetarianism.
You see, those cucumber sushi roles are nothing compared to a salmon nigiri or eel uramaki. If only there was a way of being able to eat something that tastes like deliciously fresh, succulent sushimi slices but without killing fish and devasting the ocean.
Meet Ocean Hugger Foods.
They’re a company with one mission and one mission only – to ‘create delicious, sustainable plant-based alternatives to popular seafood proteins, that delight even the most discerning of palates’.
According to a study published in the journal Nature, 90% of all large predatory fish (like tuna) are already gone – and the rate at which we’re fishing them isn’t slowing down.
So chef James Corwell decided to start working on something that could halt that and came up with Ahimi – a plant-based alternative to raw tuna for use in sashimi, nigiri, poke, tartare and ceviche.
Next stop? The company is hoping to bring out a product to replace eel and salmon.
So what exactly is Ahimi?
It’s made from a load of fresh tomatoes and ‘just a handful of all-natural ingredients’, which presumably are under wraps to stop competitors from getting their greasy mitts over the recipe.

And starting from 1 November, Whole Foods is going to start adding the tuna sushi option to its sushi bars in their NYC and LA stores.
