2020 Democratic Hopeful Kamala Harris: Trump Should Resign
First-term Senator Kamala Harris (D-CA) has joined several other Democratic Senators in declaring that President Donald Trump should resign from office over old accusations of sexual harassment.
In a new interview with Politico Thursday, Harris claimed that President Trump’s resignation is “in the best interest of the country.” She joined six other Democrat senators who have said the same: Kristin Gillibrand (D-NY), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Ron Wyden (D-OR), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Bernie Sanders (I-VT).
The Politico piece points out that Harris and Gillibrand are potential 2020 Democrat presidential candidates. Booker has not ruled out a 2020 bid; Sanders ran in 2016 but is still a favorite for 2020; Merkley could be eyeing a 2020 run, according to CNN; and rumors suggest Wyden could also make a run for it.
“First of all, we know he’s not going to resign,” Harris told Politico before adding, “But if he were going to make a decision that was in the best interest of the country, I think he should. He should seriously consider it.”
Harris also called for an inquiry into the veracity of claims against Trump.
The Senator went on to tell the outlet that she doesn’t think America has yet reached a turning point on sexual harassment, complaining that female Senators have been asked primarily about sexual harassment when the first tax reform attempt since 1986 is being debated on the Hill.
She said:
You can talk to a lot of women senators who will talk about what it’s been like around here for the last few weeks, when we’re debating a tax bill – we haven’t seen tax reform attempted since 1986 – and that’s not the question that is the lead question or any question that’s being asked of women.
When Harris ran to fill retiring Sen. Barbara Boxer’s California seat in 2016, she received endorsements from the Democrat establishment, from the very top on down. Then-President Barack Obama endorsed Harris, as did his Vice President Joe Biden, California Gov. Jerry Brown, Lieutenant Gov. Gavin Newsom, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), outgoing Sen. Boxer, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and a host of high-ranking California Democratic state legislators.
