Man who ate pie in 32 seconds is crowned pie eating champion for third year in a row
The world pie eating title holder has eaten his way to victory once again after being crowned champion for a third consecutive year.
Martin Appleton-Clare participated in the Wigan World Pie Eating Championships, which took place at Harry’s Bar in Wigan today.
The winner is the person who manages to eat a standard beef and potato pie the fastest – with each pie 12cm in diameter and 3.5cm deep.
The competition changed in 2006, as previously the competition took place over a set time and the winner was the competitor who ate the most pies during that time – however the rules were altered to meet government healthy eating guidelines.
This year, Martin, who first became the world-record holder after munching down a pie in just 23.53 seconds during the 2012 contest, was once again crowned the winner after shaving 14 seconds off 2016’s 45.5 second win, with a time of 32 seconds.
The fastest woman was Vicky Lindley who wolfed down the pie in 1 minute 30 seconds.
Of course, people don’t just eat the pies for the sake of it – it is a contest, after all – which means there’s a prize.

By breaking the record, pie-fanatics win a free lunch and a ‘Bradley Piggins’ trophy.
But let’s face it – who fancies lunch after demolishing an entire pie?
