Stefano Gabbana doesn’t want to be known as a ‘gay’ man anymore
Stefano Gabbana is probably one of the most famous LGBT figures in the world.
He’s one half of the Italian design duo Dolce & Gabbana, who although have been open about their sexuality, caused controversy in the gay community for dismissing IVF children as ‘synthetic’.
But although Dominico Dolce remains openly gay, Gabbana has said that he wants people to stop using the word in relation to him.
‘The word “gay” was invented by those who need to label people, and I don’t want to be identified by my sexual choices,’ he tells Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.
‘I don’t want to be called gay, because I am simply a man…full stop.’
He’s had enough of people considering sexuality and gay rights above human rights.
‘We are human beings before being gay, heterosexual or bisexual.’
During the course of the interview, Gabbana also recounts how he realised he was homosexual at 18 when his then-girlfriend came to visit.
When the couple was dancing, he realised that he ‘was watching the men more than her’. It was only then that he could come to terms with his sexuality.
He now says that gay associations ‘only serve as a defence but I don’t want to be protected by anyone, because I’ve done nothing wrong’.
More: Fashion
It’s not yet clear where Dolce stands on the subject.
And no doubt this is going to ruffle yet more feathers in a community already pretty hostile to the designer’s views.
After the whole IVF debate, Elton John called D&G’s comments out on Instagram, writing: ‘How dare you refer to my beautiful children as “synthetic”.
‘And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF – a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfil their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again.’
So, let’s see how this latest revelation goes down.
