Behold Pastéis de Belém, the most reviewed bakery on TripAdvisor from this year
If you thought your local does some great cakes, you may want to look away.
Because a bakery has been rated as the most reviewed on Tripadvisor and sadly, it’s nowhere near British shores.
Pastéis de Belém in Portugal’s capital is the home of the pastel de nata, aka the Portuguese custard tart.
For those unfamiliar with this sweet treat, we suggest acquainting yourself.
The café in the Belem district of Portugal, has been selling them since 1837 and now, Tripadvisor suggests it’s one of the most popular bakeries in the world.
Unsurprising, given that it currently has 33,425 reviews, with 67% of visitors raving about it. There were 10,000 reviews of the bakery posted by travellers between October 2016 and October 2017.
That’s a lot of custard tarts.
Reviewers have said: ‘We only popped in to try the fabled custard tarts. They were outstanding! Lovely decor and atmosphere here, gets 5 stars for the custard tarts alone though!’
Another said: ‘The ultimate nirvana for those who love those lovely, crunchy little custard tarts. We bought a box of eight and realised we were in immediate need of more – they are so good! We returned to the shop and bought more goodly quantities.’
Oh and for anyone worried about the queues? Reviewers have advised visitors not to be deterred: ‘It moves quickly. Get them warm and eat them up.’
It’s a little out of the way but we’re all for food pilgrimages.
Particularly when they taste as good as this.
Try not to drool, will you?
Yum.
