Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen has confirmed his impending retirement, saying he expects to have hung up his boots by the end of 2018.

Pietersen, who scored over 13,000 international runs, is currently playing in the Big Bash League for Australian franchise Melbourne Stars.

He is set to feature in Twenty20 competitions in Pakistan and South Africa this year but cannot see himself returning to Australia for the 2019 Big Bash.

Speaking after the defeat to the Melbourne Renegades, Pietersen said: ‘I’m done and dusted, playing days.

‘You get to that time in your career when you think “do I want this?” I want it desperately at the moment … but I don’t think I will want it in 10 months’ time.

‘I just don’t see myself wanting to play cricket in December.’

Pietersen, England’s second leading runscorer across all formats, was effectively sacked after the Ashes defeat in Australia in 2014.

He played his final game in England last summer for Surrey in the NatWest T20 Blast and says he intends to stay involved with the Melbourne Stars, where he has played for four seasons.

‘I love Melbourne,’ he added. ‘To have some sort of involvement going forward would be immense value for me.’
