The lawyers for the oldest Turpin children gave an “empowering” update about the “House of Horrors” family Friday.

Jack Osborn and Caleb Mason, the two attorneys for the seven adult Turpin children, gave a positive update regarding the status of the 13 children who were enslaved by their parents David and Louise Turpin, reported CBS News. The seven oldest children are currently recovering at Corona Medical Center in California, and have a separate part of the hospital strictly for themselves to adjust to life on their own.

The six younger Turpin children are currently being cared for in two separate foster homes.

The seven adults have the freedom to play outside, exercise, and use iPads at the hospital. “That’s a big deal, deciding what they’re going to read, deciding what they’re going to wear, these are all things that are decisions they make every day that are new and empowering,” said Osborn. The seven adults in the hospital are able to communicate with their siblings in foster care over Skype.

“Some of them have never really seen a toothbrush before. … Things that we just take for granted mean so much to these kids,” said Corona Mayor Karen Spiegel.

In the future, some hope to get college degrees, hike, and go to the beach. The children are truly “special individuals,” Osborn said.

The Turpin parents pleaded not guilty to 37 charges of child abuse, torture, false imprisonment, and imprisonment of a dependent adult. The father also pleaded not guilty on one charge of a lewd act to a child. The parents will appear in court Friday, reported CNN.
