Another Establishment Gets Accused Of Racism, And It Involves Jermell Charlo
Boxing pro and WBC light middleweight champ Jermell Charlo is claiming a gym in New York City is racist after they denied him entry.
Charlo and five of his buddies tried to work out at the exclusive Life Time Athletic Gym in Midtown Manhattan on Thursday night but werent allowed to enter, according to TMZ.
The whole thing was caught on video by Charlo. On it, you can clearly see Jermell and his group arguing with two women at the front desk, who tell him they reserve the right to deny entry to anybody. They claim they didnt let the men in because they smelled like marijuana.
Charlo and his friends say they hadnt smoked beforehand and one even claims hed worked out at the gym in the past. Jermell later says on video that he offered $40 to enter but was still denied entry. Its not clear how long his crew was in the gym lobby but one staffer eventually called 911, which prompted them to leave. But he made sure to film the cops in the parking lot, while still insisting they did nothing wrong.
The whole situation is pretty weird. On the one hand, most gyms have pretty exclusive usage policies and dont let random strangers walk in without a membership. On the other hand, one of these guys mentions he had set up a meeting with a trainer and offered to pay $40. Im not sure what the going rate is here but $40 for one workout seems pretty reasonable for a swanky New York gym.
Life Time has not issued a comment on the situation and Jermells social media doesnt say anything about the altercation. So it looks like for now, the details will remain pretty sketchy.
