According to local Alabama online newspaper AI.com, Grays girlfriend left him at home for about an hour and returned to find him badly injured and apparently dead from a gunshot wound.

“When deputies arrived on scene, they checked the home for additional victims or suspects,” AI.com reports. “While clearing the house deputies reported seeing marijuana, digital scales, a Glock handgun with an extended magazine and an AK-47 rifle with a large capacity magazine all in plain view.”

Gray had signed a three year, $1.5 million contract with the Green Bay Packers in 2014 but was released in 2015. The father of two returned home to Alabama shortly after his release where he took up several jobs, including working as a club promoter, a car salesman, and a house flipper.

The investigation is ongoing as police work around the clock to collect more details on what may have happened to Carlos Gray.
