Muslim Fashion Designer Anniesa Hasibuan Has Been Jailed For 18 Years
Muslim designer Anniesa Hasibuan, who hails from Indonesia, is famed for making a huge statement when she returned for her second season at New York Fashion Week. Her take on how the hijab can be styled was one, but then she also used models who were immigrants, green card holders, and 1st/2nd generation Americans, wearing makeup from a Halal-friendly beauty brand.
The fashion designer has now been sentenced to 18 years in prison after being found guilty of running a scam through First Travel, reports BBC News. Alongside her husband, Andika Surachman, it's reported the couple was paid $60million to organize pilgrimages to Mecca that never ended up happening.
According to The Straits Times, prosecutors had originally asked for 20 years behind bars for the 31-year-old who has carried out fashion shows in Cannes, London and Istanbul.
