Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has phoned Tim Cahill, Mark Milligan and Mile Jedinak to request "more goals" and throw his support behind the Socceroos ahead of tonight's World Cup match against France.

Mr Turnbull said the country was proud of the team and quizzed the players on their feelings about tonight's opponent.

"How do you feel about the French? Do you think they are overconfident?" he asked.

"We've done our analysis on them and we've done a lot of work at training since we probably came into camp three or four weeks ago, and it has all been geared up for this, so we have to go out there and put all that hard effort in and no doubt the boys will give it their all tomorrow," Jedinak said.

Mr Turnbull noted Cahill's goal-scoring at previous World Cups and asked him for "more goals" in Russia.

"I will try my best. I want to say a massive thank you for you supporting us, getting behind us and we really appreciate it, so thank you very much," Cahill said.

In 2014, former prime minister Tony Abbott also had encouraging words to say about the Australian team ahead of the World Cup in Brazil — but hit headlines after calling Mile Jedinak 'Mike'.
