Irish Politician Leaves Political Party After Opposing Abortion Referendum
A prominent Irish politician officially announced her resignation from Irelands Sinn Féin party Tuesday after it rejected her pro-life position.
Carol Nolan, an Irish politician who represented the Sinn Féin party — a political party dedicated to reuniting Ireland and ending British jurisdiction over Northern Ireland — resigned from the party after clashing with fellow members and leaders over her pro-life position.
“I feel that as a pro-life republican woman that I no longer have a place in this party, which doesnt recognise or show genuine respect for the pro-life views of members,” Nolan said, The Independent reported. “I cannot and will not support abortion and for that reason I have made a decision to leave Sinn Féin.”
The party suspended Nolan for three months after she voted against Irelands abortion referendum. The Irish electorate voted 66.4-to-33.6 percent to repeal the Eighth Amendment on May 26 after crowds of Irish — many of whom had traveled across international waters to return home and cast their ballots — traveled home to affirm or reject their commitment to protecting life. “Sinn Féin made every effort to give its members space and latitude to articulate a position contrary to the partys position in the recent referendum campaign on repeal of the eighth amendment,” Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald said, BBC News reported. The party supports legislation that will allow Ireland to officially legalize abortion.
