How we pronounce certain words will always be a popular topic of conversation.

There are some words, like scones, that are pronounced differently depending on where you go.

The latest word to be discussed (and by discussed we mean tweeted, with full conviction that theirs is the correct answer) is caramel.

No one quite knows if its meant to be pronounced caramel or carmel.

The debate was attempted to be settled on Twitter as user Janece asked followers how they said the word, using a voting system to gather the answers.

She asked for those who said it as carmel to like the tweet and those who said caramel to retweet it.

The results were heavily in favour of saying carmel as 42,000 said they preferred to say it this way.

A mere 19,000 said they say caramel.

Some got pretty passionate on the topic, saying they could only be friends with those who sided with them.

If you pronounce caramel as “carmel”, I can keep you in my life, but if you say “caramel” dont ever talk to me again, wrote one.

Equally, the disdain was shared by those who do pronounce it with an a. I dont trust people who pronounce caramel “carmel”, are you really just going to pretend there isnt an a? really?.

And one person was just not having any of it. Good morning to everyone except people who pronounce caramel as carmel, they wrote.

Any ideas why theres so much discrepancy?

Well, according to language website English Stack Exchange, its mostly to do with where youre from.

While most carmel sayers tend to be American (you wont often catch a Brit saying it, and rightly so) they tend to be contained in certain areas.

Canadians and North Americans, particularly in the East Coast, tend to say carmel.

There are many forums on the hotly debated matter and we may never know which is the correct pronunciation.

And even if we did, would we really change the way weve been saying it all this time?

(P.s its caramel)
