Lake, who played for Hawthorn and the Western Bulldogs in the AFL, had been celebrating a win in the Asian AFL with his team, the Indonesian Volcanoes, prior to be detained by authorities in Osaka.

His management company released a statement this evening announcing Lake had been released from custody and would be returning to Australia from Osaka over the weekend.

"It's obviously been a tough week for Brian, but he's looking forward to returning home to see his loved ones," i50 Management director Marty Pask said in the statement.

"He's grateful for the support and guidance he received throughout this process, in particular from his legal representation and the Australian Consulate.

"Brian will share his story when he's ready, but we ask for his privacy to be respected in the meantime."

Lake had posted an image of himself on Instagram holding the trophy the Volcanoes had won, featuring the caption: "Not sure what's happening but we won today!"

Under Japanese law, people suspected of a crime can be detained for 23 days without charge.

Lake played more than 250 matches with the Bulldogs and Hawks, where he won three premierships between 2013 and 2015.

Brian Lake holds the AFL premiership trophy at the MCG after the 2013 grand final.

He claimed the Norm Smith Medal for the best player on the ground in the 2013 grand final.

Lake retired from the Hawks at the end of the 2015 season.

In 2013, Lake apologised to Hawthorn, his family and fans after a drunken incident at the Portsea Polo.
