An Adelaide suburban women's cricket team has stunned its understrength opponent by smashing a gargantuan total of 3/596 off its 50 overs.
Key points:
- Northern Districts scores 3/596 off 50 overs before bowling out Port Adelaide for just 25
- The Northern Districts total is believed to be a world record for a women's game at district level
- Four players scored centuries and the total included 88 extras
Northern Districts, known as the Jets, set the score in Sunday's limited overs match against Port Adelaide at a run rate of almost 12 an over.
In reply, Port Adelaide — who fielded 10 players, only eight of whom batted — was dismissed for a total of just 25 runs from 10.5 overs.
Four Jets players made centuries in the Statewide Super Women's First Grade match, including captain Tegan McPharlin, who top-scored with 130 off 80 balls.
While definitive statistics for suburban games are hard to come by, the score is believed to be a world record for a women's game at district level.
"It's pretty cool that, at the end of the day, we potentially have a world record," McPharlin said.
"It's pretty unreal to make a total like that. At the time, we weren't chasing any records or trying to set any benchmarks in that way. We were just playing cricket shots."
Teammates Sam Betts (124 not out off 71 balls), Tabitha Saville (120 off 56) and Darcie Brown (117 not out off 84) also made centuries — the latter two for the first time.
The Jets score was boosted by 88 extras, including 75 wides, as well as 64 fours and three sixes.
"The runs just kept piling on," McPharlin said.
"There were only three sixes hit for the entire day for us.
"It just shows that we were willing to run between the wickets and hit along the ground and actually play proper cricket."
It is not the first time Port Adelaide has conceded a mammoth score this season, which is only two games old.
McPharlin said Southern Districts made 415 against Port Adelaide a week earlier.
But she said the attention around the more recent game was good for women's cricket.
"It probably doesn't reflect the competition itself in terms of how even it is, but it's still huge for women's sport and promotion," she said.
The highest score in an international 50-over game was set this year by the New Zealand women's team, which made 4/490 against Ireland.
The England men's team scored 6/481 against Australia at Nottingham in June.
Last year, a South African university side smashed 3/677 off 50 overs, with one batsman scoring 490 runs.
