Rugby league star Jarryd Hayne has been arrested in connection to an alleged sexual assault in the NSW Hunter region on NRL grand final night.

Key points:

  • NSW Police arrested the star rugby league player
  • A woman told detectives she suffered injuries during an alleged sexual encounter
  • Hayne yet to comment publicly on the incident or the arrest

The 30-year-old turned himself in at Ryde Police Station about 4:00pm on Monday and was at the police station being interviewed by detectives.

Hayne has not been spotted exiting the station, and it is understood the interview continued late into Monday night.

The alleged sexual assault occurred on September 30 — this year's NRL grand final night — at a house in the NSW Hunter region.

The pair allegedly had sex, with the woman telling detectives she suffered injuries during the encounter.

It is understood the pair communicated through a series of messages on social media before the alleged encounter.

The woman involved lodged a complaint to the NRL Integrity Unit over the alleged incident earlier this year.

Hayne is yet to comment on the allegations.

Hayne, who began his career with the Parramatta Eels in 2006, left the club to chase his dream of playing professionally in America's NFL.
