George Bailey quits as Tigers captain, ABC understands

George Bailey's tenure as captain of the Tasmanian Tigers is believed to be over, with the 36-year-old understood to have voluntarily stood down from the role.

Wicketkeeper Matthew Wade is believed to be the favourite to be named as his replacement, and could be announced as captain of the team as soon as this morning.

The ABC understands it was Bailey's decision to stand down, and that he told the playing and coaching group yesterday.

Bailey took the helm of the Tigers from Dan Marsh in 2009/10, and captained the team to Sheffield Shield titles in 2011 and 2013.

He also captained the Australian one day and T20 sides.

He will continue to play as a batsman for Tasmania, but has started the Sheffield Shield season poorly, averaging just 5.62 runs from eight innings while persisting with a unique backwards facing batting stance.
