Cassandra Emary, 23, was kayaking in a river near the tourist hotspot of Pokhara on Thursday when she was killed.
Nepali police say they are investigating.
Fellow athletes paid tribute to Ms Emary on Facebook, remembering her as a "vivacious, infectious, inspiring and powerful young woman".
She had competed in the World Rafting Championships in Argentina last month.
"As a team and individuals we are struggling to come to terms with her tragic loss and have been forever changed by her invaluable contribution to this team and our sport," her teammates posted online.
"Like so many of us, the river gave her life meaning."
Ms Emary had travelled previously to Nepal, which attracts amateur and professional adventurers from around the world for white water rafting and kayaking.
The International Rafting Federation (IRF) also paid tribute to Ms Emary.
"Not one to let boundaries or challenges get in her way, Cass was an avid white water kayaker and adventurer," the IRF said on its website.
The death brings to three the number of Australians killed in adventure sports in Nepal this month.
Internationally renowned Tasmanian kayaker Adrian Kiernan, 31, died in a paddling accident in western Nepal last month.
Newcastle-based mountain climber Michael Davis, 33, died last month when a falling rock severed ropes he was using to climb a peak near Mount Everest.
