Is honey better for you than sugar?

Sugar is the newest public enemy number one in the food industry, and there has been a marked increase in the number of people trying to cut down on it.

Some are simply looking to steer clear of refined sugars, instead going for substitutes like honey.

This natural, sweet liquid is created by bees and – although it isnt vegan – can taste sweeter than sugar depending on the type.

Is it actually healthier for you than sugar, though? We take a look.

Honey benefits

The reason this nectar actually tastes sweeter than sugar is because it is. Its made up of 40% fructose and 30% glucose, as well as water and some vitamins. This is a benefit in the sense that you need to use less to achieve the same effect.

It also has a lower GI value than sugar, so foes not raise your blood sugar as quickly.

Others feel that honey is healthier due to the fact is has been used as an antiseptic for years, and because its flavonoid content is considered to be antibacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergenic.

Honey disadvantages

Although it does have these benefits, honey if more calorific than sugar. Due to this, it makes sense for people to watch their intake if theyre being careful of calories.

Plus, although the GI value is lower, it will still affect your blood sugar, so wont be too different to standard sugar for diabetics.

Honey could also be dangerous for children under a year, as it contains bacterial spores that can cause botulism in infants.
