2-Year-Old Girl Goes Missing While Crossing The Rio Grande With Mother

A 2-year-old Brazilian girl went missing after being separated from her mother while crossing the Rio Grande river, according to U.S. Border Patrol.

The girl was separated from her mother, a Haitian national, on their way across a section of the Rio Grande outside of Del Rio, Texas, late Monday, the girls mother told Border Patrol, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Agents from the Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue (BORSTAR) unit and Mexican authorities searched for the girl through Monday night and into Tuesday, Border Patrol said. BORSTAR is an elite Border Patrol unit, tasked with saving migrants stranded in the harsh terrain along the border. “Any time a child is lost it is a tragic event,” Chief Patrol Agent Raul L. Ortiz of the Del Rio sector said.

“I cannot imagine the anguish the parents of this young girl must be feeling and I hope our search efforts pay off with a positive outcome,” he continued.

One-year-old Angie Valeria and her father, Óscar Alberto Martínez, were found dead in June in the Rio Grande near Matamoros, Mexico.
