Paris Saint-Germain defender Thomas Meunier has explained why Chelsea’s deadline day move to sign him fell through, saying the French club refused to entertain the Blues’ offer.

The Belgian right-back revealed the surprise snub last week, with Antonio Conte having made Meunier his first-choice target before eventually settling for Davide Zappacosta in the final hours of the window.

Although Meunier initially suggested he had turned down the move, he now claims it was PSG who vetoed the deal as it would have left them short on cover at right-back.

Speaking to Sky Sports after Belgium’s draw with Mexico, he said: ‘The last day of the transfer period they [Chelsea] made an offer to Paris but it was no from the club.

‘They did not want to sell me because we only have two right-backs at the club, Dani Alves and myself. It was difficult to sell one.’

Asked if he would have liked to join Chelsea, he continued: ‘I didn’t really think about it because they called me and told me I will not move at all.

‘They said, “Don’t think about Chelsea or another club. You will not move, you’ll stay at Paris and we are counting on you for the season.”’

Meunier has also been linked with Manchester United recently, and has previously revealed that he is a big fan of the Red Devils and would love to play for the club one day.

‘I’ve never hidden that I’m a big fan of Manchester United, which remains, in my eyes, the real reference in the world of football,’ he stated back in February.

The Belgian is reportedly growing frustrated at PSG after losing his place in Unai Emery’s starting XI, with summer arrival from Juventus Dani Alves starting seven of PSG’s first 12 league matches.
